This is one of the questions we answer most often at Fully Promoted Springfield. Embroidery or screen printing? Both put your logo on a garment, but they do it differently, they perform differently over time, and they suit different applications.
The answer depends on your order size, your garment type, your logo complexity, and what you actually need the decorated garment to do. Here's the practical breakdown.
Embroidery uses needle and thread to stitch your logo directly into the fabric of the garment. The design is first 'digitised' — converted from your logo file into a stitch file that tells the embroidery machine exactly where each stitch goes, in which direction, and in which thread colour.
Our machines in Augustine Heights follow that file precisely, producing consistent results across every garment in the run.
Because the design is literally woven into the fabric, embroidery is extremely durable. Thread doesn't fade like ink can over time, it doesn't crack like some screen prints can after repeated washing, and it holds its texture and appearance for the life of the garment.
For most work uniform applications — polo shirts, drill shirts, caps, jackets — embroidery is the standard for a reason.
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the surface of the fabric, one colour at a time. Each colour in your design requires a separate screen, which is why screen printing has higher setup costs than embroidery for small quantities.
But once the screens are made, the per-unit cost of printing each additional garment is very low — making screen printing the most cost-efficient method for large, consistent runs.
Screen printing suits flat, smooth fabrics best — cotton and cotton-poly blend t-shirts and singlets are the sweet spot. It handles bold, flat-colour designs particularly well.
If your logo has fewer than five solid colours and you're ordering 24 or more garments in the same design, screen printing is worth considering. If you need photographic or gradient artwork, or your order is below 24 pieces, screen printing's advantages fade quickly.
This is the most important factor for business Workwear. Workwear gets washed frequently — sometimes daily, often at higher temperatures — and it gets physically used hard on site.
Embroidery holds up through this better than any print alternative. Thread is colourfast and doesn't respond to wash temperature or detergent the way ink does. A properly embroidered chest logo will look as sharp after 100 washes as it did after the first.
Quality screen printing on cotton can last 30–50 washes before showing visible wear. That's acceptable for promotional t-shirts worn occasionally, but not ideal for work shirts that cycle through the wash three to five times per week.
Embroidery digitising is a one-time cost. Once your logo is on file, all future orders use the same file at no extra setup cost.
Embroidery is best suited to logos with defined shapes and a limited colour palette. Very fine text, thin lines, and photographic/gradient elements are difficult to reproduce cleanly in embroidery.
Screen printing handles a wider range of designs as long as you're working within a colour count. For full-colour or photographic designs, DTF printing is often the best solution.
For most Springfield business workwear — polo shirts, drill shirts, corporate shirts, caps, and jackets — embroidery is the right choice. It's durable, professional, and perfect for repeated washing.
For larger runs of casual branded tees or event shirts where cost is the priority, screen printing is a strong option. For complex, colourful, or photographic logos, DTF printing is the modern solution.
The best advice is to work with a supplier who offers all three methods and recommends the right process for your specific needs.
Embroidery is significantly more durable for workwear. It withstands hundreds of wash cycles without fading or cracking. Screen printing typically shows wear after 30–50 washes.
Embroidery is generally more economical for small orders (under 24 pieces). Screen printing becomes more cost-effective for large runs (50+ pieces).
Yes — multiple colours are fine. However, very fine detail, gradients, or photographic elements may need simplification. Our team will advise you.
It is possible but must strictly follow AS/NZS 4602.1 rules (cannot cover retroreflective tape). Embroidery or heat-transfer vinyl are often preferred on hi-vis garments.
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing applies a full-colour transfer to the garment. It excels at complex, colourful, and photographic designs with no high minimum order. Great durability for small to medium runs.
