Which Branding Method is Right for Your Business?

Custom branded uniforms are one of the most effective ways to build your visual identity. According to the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management, professional work apparel creates stronger customer trust and correlates directly with higher service quality and employee reliability. But with so many uniform printing options available, how do you select the right method for your business? Within this guide, we’ll break down the different branding methods to help you choose the best option.

What are the different types of branding methods?

When choosing a uniform printing method, consider how the garments will be worn and the visual identity of your logo. Fully Promoted offers a range of premium apparel branding techniques, including:

  • Embroidery services: Stitches your design into the fabric for a premium, textured finish, making it a great option for button-downs, polo shirts, outerwear, and headwear.
  • Screen printing: Uses custom stencils, also known as screens, to apply specialised ink directly onto fabric. It creates a durable, bold and clean graphic that sits smoothly on the material.
  • Direct to Film (DTF) printing: Prints full-colour artwork or images onto a specialised transfer film which is heat-pressed onto garments. It’s a great option for fine-line and photographic designs and can be printed on a wide range of fabric blends.
  • Supacolour heat transfers: Are screen-printed transfers that combine traditional screen print with digital print technology. Designed for high durability and strong dye block-out on softshell and waterproof jackets. Supacolour is ideal for premium garments and repeat orders that require consistent colour matching.
  • Heat transfer vinyl: Precision-cut solid vinyl sheets are heat-fused onto fabric, making them ideal for simple single-colour designs, individual staff names, or jersey numbers.
  • Direct to Garment (DTG) printing: Applies ink directly into 100% cotton or cotton blend garment fabric fibres. Prints don’t crack or peel, and the garment can be stretched without affecting the design. DTG can also seamlessly print over zippers and other difficult areas on garments.
  • Dye sublimation printing: A full colour, full-coverage printing technique that uses the process of sublimation to permanently stain dye into polyester fabric. Using this technique, your artwork is printed onto transfer paper and pressed onto white or lightly coloured fabrics using high heat.

Which branding method lasts the longest?

Choosing the right application method prevents premature fading, cracking or peeling and keeps your brand looking professional for longer. Each branding method works best for specific garments and workwear requirements.

Here’s how each branding method compares across different durability needs:

  • Embroidery services: Use tough polyester thread, which can withstand commercial washing, high heat, and sunlight without fading, making it ideal for workwear, trades, and scrubs.
  • Screen printing: Holds up well for everyday wear. The ink bonds straight to the fabric fibres and handles repeated washing easily. With simple wash care, screen-printed designs can stay vibrant for years.
  • Direct to Film (DTF): Is durable for regular washing and medium- to long-term wear. Its flexible print layer stretches with fabric movement to prevent peeling and cracking, ensuring multi-colour artwork remains vibrant through repeated washing. This is not suitable for regular dryer use.
  • Supacolour heat transfers: These will hold up well across a range of garments, from cotton polos and fleece hoodies to technical outerwear. Formulated for high wash durability, it offers superior dye block-out on softshell and waterproof jackets. This is not suitable for regular dryer use.
  • Heat transfer vinyl: Tough and durable for sports teamwear, numbers, and individual staff names. The solid vinyl layer handles regular washing well and maintains high contrast on activewear and uniforms. This is not suitable for regular dryer use.
  • Direct to Garment (DTG): Inks bond directly into 100% cotton or natural fibre garments, offering a soft feel that wears and ages naturally with the garment without cracking or peeling.
  • Dye sublimation printing: As the artwork is dyed directly into polyester fabrics, it becomes a part of the material and will last as long as the garment.

How much does each branding method cost?

Branding costs depend on design complexity and total order quantity:

  • Small orders (1-10 items): DTF printing, DTG printing, Heat transfer vinyl and dye sublimation printing are traditionally the most cost-effective choices for small order batches, as you avoid the setup fees of screen printing and embroidery.
  • Mid-sized orders (10-50 items): Embroidery and Supacolour transfers work well for standard team uniforms. While embroidery requires a one-off set-up fee to convert your logo into a stitch pattern, reordering the same design in the future is fast, straightforward, and eliminates repeat setup costs. Supacolour also maintains exact colour consistency across repeat reorders.
  • Bulk orders (50+ items): Screen printing provides the lowest per-unit cost for large single-colour runs. While there are initial screen setup fees, these are spread across the entire order, meaning the price per garment drops as your order grows. For designs with four or more colours, DTF printing can be a cost-effective option, as it avoids the need for separate screens for each colour. However, sublimation is also worth considering for bulk orders featuring large, colourful or high-density graphics, particularly on suitable polyester garments. For large corporate polo rollouts, embroidery is another great option that delivers a professional finish and consistent value.
