Sublimation for performance apparel
For polyester sportswear, dye sublimation is often the ideal method.
Because sublimation bonds the dye into the fibres rather than sitting on top, it adds no weight, no stiffness and does not affect breathability at all. The fabric stays exactly as light and flexible as it started. This is why full sports uniforms with all-over designs are almost always sublimated. The requirement is that the fabric is polyester and light coloured, which sportswear generally is.
Vinyl for names and numbers
For personalised sports apparel, vinyl heat transfer handles names and numbers well.
Modern vinyls designed for activewear can flex and breathe better than older heavy vinyls, and they apply cleanly to technical fabrics. For team apparel needing individual names and numbers, vinyl remains the practical choice, often combined with a sublimated or printed main design.
Matching the method to the garment
The right choice depends on the garment and the design.
For a small logo on a performance polo, embroidery or a transfer both work well. For a full-colour, all-over sports design, sublimation is the clear answer. For names and numbers, vinyl. For a detailed logo on a technical jacket, a transfer usually beats stitching.
