I’m a fan of merch, and it’s a trait that runs through my entire family!! When we attend concerts or sporting events, we often find ourselves at the front of the merch tent to see what mementos or items we can come home with. But it doesn’t just extend to concerts and sports, it extends to our past workplaces too!
I was tidying up at home the other day, and stumbled upon some old branded merchandise, which sparked some very fond memories that I wanted to share. The power of branded merchandise is much more than a brand in the hands – it can create lasting memories!
The cap is from the Optus Cup (1996-1997), when Optus was the sponsor of the NRL. At the time, I was working for Optus Vision as the Community Events Manager, and I had the pleasure of coordinating local community events for Optus Vision, including promotional events at the weekly NRL games for the Optus Cup. My girlfriend (now beloved wife) called me the Giveaway King, as I would hand out branded merchandise items to people at the events, all to get the name of Optus Vision in the hands of Aussies. Branded merchandise was everywhere at Optus Vision – t-shirts, stickers, caps, books, pens and more. All in the name of promoting the brand. Well guess what, it worked!
Each year for the past 20 years, I’ve gone away with a group of 16 mates for our annual boys Golf Weekend, known as the Autumn Invitational. A new shirt design is created each year, and we all proudly turn up with our branded golf shirts, vests or bags – ‘on tour’. I’m the proud owner of more than a dozen of these shirts – they’re great quality and are worn frequently. Each time I put the shirt on, I get a big golfing grin! You can see the history of our brands with this shirt from 2010 as it was made by Embroidme North Sydney, the precursor to Fully Promoted.
In 2023, my family and I attended the FIFA Women's World Cup - and loved every moment. Go the Tillies! We treated ourselves to shirts, jackets, keyrings and this nifty book and pen! We simply couldn't resist getting these momentoes of a fabulous time!
